APO was set up by Lindsay Brown as part of a Professional Doctorate project at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. The project initially examined the learning needs of Advanced Practitioners locally and subsequently expanded its focus.  The work explored advanced practice, clinical learning, professional networking, role development, and e-learning as a viable option to supplement traditional methods.  The site is mostly for Advanced Practitioners in Primary Care settings who are working in autonomous clinical positions.

The website and linked Facebook and Twitter feeds continue to be developed and aim to be a central resource providing e-learning, professional information, current advanced practice issues, professional networking and support.  APO intends to foster a culture of learning, enhance clinical knowledge, improve professional networking and to assist continuous professional development.
